In addition to my poetry, I have included on this site articles and presentations about poetry and the second generation, all but one authored by me. Some of the articles are based on presentations given at seminars and conferences.
The first article is from the Boundaries Conference held in Chicago in 2001 by the University of Illinois Chicago and in it I deal with the use of poetry to transcend boundaries in Survivor families.
The next article written to explain the use of poetry to create narrative and also to allow catharsis and healing is called “A Poet Reflects On His Legacy.” It appeared in the e-journal of the Baycrest Center, Toronto, Canada “If Not Now” in the Fall 2003.
Around that time I traveled to Auschwitz as part of a joint Arab-Jewish contingent lead by the Archimandrite Emile Shoufani. After the journey I wrote a diary of the visit called “Auschwitz Diary” which deals with the intense emotions of the visit to Auschwitz, but also with the emotion of being accompanied and even comforted by my Arab companions.
Later that year I wrote another piece related to the journey called “Crying Alone” which deals with the intergenerational transmission of pain and trauma as regards the Holocaust and the Arab-Israeli conflict.
In 2004 I presented my ideas about poetry and the Second Generation at a workshop at the Yad Vashem Educators Seminar in Jerusalem, Israel. In it I used my poetry and the poetry of other Second Generation to expand on “The Role of Poetry for the Second Generation.”
In January 2007 an article was published in the Baycrest e-journal” If Not Now” by Rivka Pollack about Poetry and the Holocaust called “Poetry in Response to the Holocaust” in which my poetry appears and and an e-mail interview was conducted.
